Memorial Park _ Visible Archives of the Sewol Ferry Disaster _

The exhibition is a visible archive of artifacts from the great tragedy that happened on April 16th, 2014. The Sewol ferry disaster in South Korea.

The exhibition is a visible archive of artifacts from the great tragedy that happened on April 16th, 2014. It has two primary archive elements. The Horizontal Display System for physical artifacts lays out personal objects lost and damaged during the ferry disaster. The Media Archive Timelines show visual and audio artifacts recorded during the tragedy and after.

Audio and video files recorded by cars, cameras, and cell phones on the ferry as well as files recorded by rescuers, news agencies, and observers from the exterior are compiled and organized into an archival timeline. These files play in sequence across the video wall as evidence and narration of the tragedy. Because there are many more files in the total media archive than there are screens, each time the sequence plays new files in new combinations will be selected to appear. Information about the source of the file, the location, and the time code pertaining to the unfolding of the disaster will appear on each screen.

Curation and Exhibition Design: Mark Wasiuta, Jean Im and Farah Alkhoury
